Phyl Knoll of Hawthorne is well known as having served on the California WBA board of directors from 1990-2006 and given honorary Member Emertia status when CWBA was dissolved. The mother of three accomplished children, two boys and a daughter, Phyl was a tough task master as a "mom" in raising her kids. A single mother at the time - up at 4:00 A.M. getting clothes ready and lunches made to get her charges off to school and get herself ready for work at General Motors Acceptance Corporation, she could not allow any grass to grow under her feet. Dinner needed to be prepared when she got home from work and she was vigilant in monitoring homework and chores to be done for her children. This was not a summer occurrence! Phyl raised her children pretty much alone. I am sure there were many weary mornings and nights but there was a mission afoot. She brings this M.O. to everything she does and the California Bowling Writers welcomes her.
After 35 years, Phyl retired from GMAC but over the years the one pleasure she allowed herself was bowling. Maybe it was what saved her sanity. She also met another "Phil" - Phil Knoll. They were married in 1977 and celebrated 30 years of wedded bliss in June. Phil, also an accomplished bowler, just shot his first 300 game in July of 2006 and carried 195-200+ in three leagues.
An accomplished bowler herself with several titles and a 700 + to her credit, Phyl has been involved in all facets of bowling - Leadership, President of her Association twice and Secretary of the National Women Bowling Writers; A Journalist - an NWBW , CWBA and CBW award winner and chair of numerous committees and she currently serves as a Director on the CUSBC board of directors. She continues to take on any assignment and produces a memorable event. Her work as Star of Tomorrow committee chair for CWBA was a true labor of love bringing out a detailed account of each Star as they were honored by CWBA and she brings that talent to CUSBC Star committee. Being one that takes on any challenge it would be short changing her if the description was anything less than a mover and shaker. She makes it happen.
Phyl has also served the California Bowling Writers as chair of the Nominating Committee and has carved out a reputation for herself as dependable and is a prolific writer. The California Bowling Writers is pleased to welcome Phyl Knoll as Director #2 South - an added asset.
